People get Rolfed to improve their quality of life. Most clients come to Rolfing for help with pain, discomfort or impaired mobility. Rolfing also improves performance, enhances posture, and augments personal growth. Some seek Rolfing as an adjunct to counseling to improve their awareness and connect to their body
Babies, children, teens, adults and elderly can all benefit from Rolfing. Rolfing techniques are always applied to suit each persons circumstances. A few diseases react poorly to pressure. If you have concerns about your suitability for Rolfing, we can discuss them, or you can consult your physician.
Rolfing works with three-dimensional soft tissue patterns that limit balance, alignment and comfort. It is a process of gradually and progressively easing the bodys strain to evoke order, support, spaciousness and efficient movement. Rolfing works with individualized treatment plans tailored specifically to each clients needs and the reasons they seek Rolfing.
Chiropractic is primarily concerned with freeing spinal joint restrictions and promoting nerve flow to and from the spine. It does not address the soft tissue patterns of the whole body and their influence on structural balance. The Rolfing method uses gentle soft tissue techniques to treat osseous restrictions that are a part of the overall body pattern. From my perspective Rolfing and Chiropractic care are compatible and can be complimentary.
Massage is a broad term that refers to many styles of bodywork. In general, massage promotes relaxation and blood flow. Some "deep tissue" massage works to release local patterns of structural strain, but this is not usually done as part of a strategy to balance the whole body.

Rolfing usually feels like deep pressure. Because Rolfers interact with patterns of strain in the body, there are sensations of varying intensity associated with the process. Sensations vary from barely perceptible to barely tolerable, but they are never unbearable. The client always defines the limits of their comfort zone.
Contrary, to what many people have heard, there is no absolute amount of pressure that Rolfing requires. Every Rolfing intervention is adjusted to specifically meet the clients needs.
Lisa, a software company owner and yoga practitioner comments the issue of pain:
"The other thing I expected from rolfing was pain. Its what Id always heard: Rolfing hurts. And its not like theres been no pain ever, but theres been surprisingly little. Most of the time, the work feels incredibly subtle and precise. The surprising thing to me is how deep the work can go and how impacting it can be, without pain. Ive experienced far more painful types of bodywork that had little or no real impact."

The number of sessions needed to be thorough varies depending on your goals and how quickly we can address them. At the beginning of treatment, we establish reasonable goals and evaluate the progress together as we go along. Classically, a basic series consists of ten sessions, and give or take a few, it is a good number to plan on. Sometimes clients return for additional sessions as needed, while others choose to receive on-going work on some regular basis.

You may have as many, or as few sessions as you want. Deciding whether or not to follow the process to completion is different for everyone. Some clients know they want a whole series of sessions before they begin. Some develop a commitment as they realize the effects of Rolfing. A few decide Rolfing is not for them or wish to try another practitioner. If there is sufficient interst I usually suggest trying one session to see how it feels. Usually, clients know within three to five sessions if things are moving in a direction they find worthwhile.

Under some circumstances you may be eligible to receive insurance reimbursement for Rolfing. The most typical possibilities are:
1) Medical payments associated with Auto Accidents.
2) Labor and Industry claims.
3) If your health insurance reimburses for massage therapy, it may cover Rolfing. Please note I am not a preferred provider under any Insurance plan.

Typically, clients remain clothed in their under garments. It is optimal to have your skin exposed. It is never necessary to be completely unclothed. If you are uncomfortable clothed in your underwear, a bathing suit, jogging shorts, and a t-shirt can work.
